Seal beach once eclipsed Newport Beach and Huntington Beach in tourism. That was the roaring 20’s and the town was full of life. Long before Disneyland was founded, Seal Beach had a beach-side amusement park that brought such a thrill to the community that screams from rollercoaster riders could be heard by residents of the neighboring Long Beach. The Shops at Rossmoor picks up where Downtown Seal Beach leaves off. There isn’t the same old-fashioned charm, but the Shops at Rossmoor is a mall with all the benefits: department stores, clothing boutiques, grocery stores, food court, and more.
Seal Beach may be a small city in Orange County but it has neighborhoods that provide communities for people of all walks of life. The city is serviced by the Los Alamitos Unified School District and there is one elementary school in the city, J. H. Mcgaugh Elementary School, a highly ranked school, but students 6th grade and beyond will have to look beyond the borders of Seal Beach to find middle schools and high schools. Luckily, the city is small which makes schooling options in neighboring towns a very short commute.
Seal Beach has calmed down since its time as one of the biggest tourist beach towns in Orange County, but the community pride hasn’t ebbed a bit. Its pier, rebuilt multiple times with the help and fundraising of residents, and downtown are tributes to its past. These days, visitors and residents will find a slow-paced city with quiet beaches far removed from the bustling South Orange County shores.
