Whittier is a one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County located at the foot of the Puente Hills, about 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 20 miles northwest of Anaheim. With a population of almost 100,000 people, Whittier is a beautiful, friendly, safe community with a well-maintained infrastructure, including quality private and parochial schools, award-winning elementary, middle and high schools, Whittier College and Rio Hondo College. The city offers a wide spectrum of affordable housing options, including Victorian homes, California bungalows, condominiums, townhouses and apartments. While predominantly residential, Whittier manufactures such diversified goods as potato chips, automobile, aircraft, and missile parts and is home to several administrative headquarters. The city still works to attract more well-known businesses and open new residential townhomes with the revival of its Uptown district. In addition, the city is working on developing a 480-acre master plan near Whittier Blvd. Of note, Whittier was the hometown of President Richard M. Nixon.
