East San Diego, California was originally an independent city, though it was short-lived. East San Diego existed from 1912 to 1923 in what is now the City Heights neighborhood in San Diego. It’s easily confused with East County, San Diego, which includes the four cities directly East of San Diego — El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and Santee, in addition to several communities such as Lakeside, Spring Valley, Jamul, and Alpine.

Many consider City Heights one of the best neighborhoods in San Diego.
