Palm Desert is a city in Riverside County, in the Coachella Valley, approximately 11 miles east of Palm Springs. A major center of growth, it has been a popular retreat for “snowbirds” from colder climates, who swell its population by an estimated 31,000 each winter, but in the past couple of years Palm Desert has seen more residents become “full-timers” who now live in the city year-round. Palm Desert may have 75,000 to 85,000 at January 1st as the “season” peaks and decreases by half at July 1st as the hot desert summer settles in. Palm Desert is the home of the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, a combination zoo and botanical garden featuring an extensive collection of desert plants and animals. As well as quality schools, shopping, dining and a range of safe, quiet neighborhoods, many of them designed in the resort-style and gated.
